NZ Snowfields to open in 2020

There has been great news out of New Zealand of late! Reportedly the winter season could get the green light for winter 2020. Great News for snow lovers! A huge step towards a return to normality for NZ.

It’s unbearable to consider being forced to stay home on a pow day so the news is very welcome Indeed! 1 minute of silence for our friends in the northern hemisphere who had their season cut short.

New Zealand has been very effective with its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and as such has moved to ease restrictions incrementally. As we edge closer and closer to the winter season it is looking as though with various social distancing conditions, the people of NZ could enjoy their slopes just in time JUN-SEPT.

Simultaneously in an announcement from Vail Resorts, who operate resorts in Australia; Without a firm update from the Australian government at this stage they are unable to confirm or comment on whether resorts will open for the Australian winter. While this is some cause for concern for snow lovers in Australia we hope the NZ approach to winter 2020 jumps the Tasman too!

With NZ leading the charge in the southern hemisphere we are hopeful that the neighbouring resorts from Australia may have similar plans in mind. Australia and NZ have shared very similar strategies with responding to Covid-19 and the results with all data shows a decrease in cases nation wide for both countries leading to less restrictions. Utilisation of appropriate and revised social distancing rules will have to apply but the opening of winter destinations represents a huge boost for the economy and the small business owners surrounding these holiday destinations. Fingers crossed.

With ongoing discussions between Australia & New Zealands PM’s travel between these countries could be a not too distant reality so keen boarders and skiers could find themselves hopping on a plane to NZ if snow resorts in Australia are unable to follow suit. Not a bad back up plan if you ask us.

We truly hope the people of both countries get to reward themselves after following the strict social distancing rules of months past in this extraordinary year of 2020. Hats off to NZ!

The example being set by NZ is great for the rest of the world and we hope everyone gets to enjoy their winter wherever they are.

Stay safe everyone!

Let it Snow!

Alec took his slabs of wood worldwide for years. He floated around enjoying basic day to day creature comforts like salt, beers and nasi goreng, amidst chasing snow for as many days of the year as possible. Then he got a day job... But the dream lives on, Today he loves nothing more than snowboarding, writing for Genki and just being the #1 snow hound this world has ever seen.
